STP Hints

Schon seit langer Zeit gibt es von diesem WEB aus eine Ergänzung für UltraEdit um die STR Dateien färbig anzuzeigen. dazu ist ein Eintrag im STP.INI File wie EditorName="C:\Program Files\IDM Computer Solutions\UltraEdit-32\uedit32.exe"

For some time I offer an extension for UltraEdit to display the STR file in color coding. To start an external Editor directly from STP you need an entry in the STP.INI file like EditorName="C:\Program Files\IDM Computer Solutions\UltraEdit-32\uedit32.exe"

Beim Verkabeln von Abschnitten sollte man unbedingt sofort alle Verbindungen entsprechend beschriften. Dazu eignen sich diverse Beschriftungsgeräte oder Markierungsringe am Kabel. Eine schnelle Alternative mit Zusatznutzen ist das Anfertigen von Etiketten mit der entsprechenden Info. Dazu kann man die Serienbrief Funktion von MS Word benutzen um die Etiketten schnell ohne Aufwand zu erzeugen.

Wenn man immer 2 Etiketten gleichen Inhalts druckt kann man beide Enden eines Kabels sauber beschriften. Fehler fallen auch leicht auf sollte es plötzlich zweimal eine Etikette bedürfen oder wenn Etiketten ungeplanterweise über bleiben. Mein Vorschlag ist auf die Etikette MX9 Nummer, Anschlußnummer und STP Abschnittsnummer aufzudrucken. Weiters kann eine Hintergrundfarbe der Etikette schnell Auskunft über die Funktion der Leitung (Gleis, Weiche, Signal) geben. Die Info:

bedeutet MX9 Nummer 23 Anschluß 15 STP Abschnitt 367. Das ganze 2 mal gedruckt damit man die Etikette um das Kabel kleben kann und von beiden Seiten lesen kann. Zwischen den Bezeichnungen können noch Zusatzhinweise, hier "D D D" angebracht werden. Ich habe ein WordFile am WEB hinterlegt. Die Tabelle paßt für die leicht im Papierfachhandel zu erhaltenden Avery / Zweckform 45.7 x 21.2 mm Formate L4773, L6009, J4791, J4720, L4770, L6103-20, L6038-20, L6039-20, L6040-20, L6041-20, L6009-20, L4778-20, L4736REV-25 oder ähnliche.

Wiring sections you should immediately label all connections. You might use printing machines or marking rings A quick and easy alternative are adhesive labels which you can source at paper shops easily. Just use the mail merge function of MS Word to generate the label file, without much effort.

I recommend to print two labels of the same content to use them at each end of the connection. Mistakes are easily spot. if you once need the same connection twice. Also of there are unplanned labels left on the sheet. I suggest to print the MX9 number, the MX9 connector and the STP section number. Additionally a background color might indicate the usage of the wire quickly like section, turnout, signal and so on. the information

indicated MX9 number 23 connector 15 and STP section 367. The information is printed twice to allow to fold the label around the wire and offer readability from both sides. between the numbers you may insert additional Information like the "D D D" here. I have put a MS Word file here with already generated labels for those who are not so familiar with the mailmaerge function of Word. The labels I used are Avery / Zweckform ones in the format 45,6 x 21,2mm dimension. Product numbers like L4773, L6009, J4791, J4720, L4770, L6103-20, L6038-20, L6039-20, L6040-20, L6041-20, L6009-20, L4778-20, L4736REV-25 should be fine. There are maybe more of those just check the size  when you look out for the labels or generate them yourself.

MX9 Etiketten / MX9 labels

Die Abschnitte gehören auf jeden Fall VOR der Verkabelung geplant. Man kann dazu die STP Druckinfos benutzen. Zunächst wird der Gleisplan ausgedruckt, danach die Nummern auf Folie. So kann man leicht die verschiedenen Abschnitte verfolgen. Um die Abschnittsgrenzen besser kenntlich zu machen habe ich folgenden Hinweis. In STP in den Online Modus gehen. Im Menu Info / Sollanzeige auf die bunte Darstellung wechseln. Dann mit HP1 jeden zweiten Abschnitt markieren. Über die Funktionstasten F9/F10 geht das besonders schnell. So kann man den Gleisplan mit roten und grünen Abschnitten ausdrucken. Stoßen 2 gleichfärbige Abschnitte zusammen, kann man sich zusätzlich ein Gleis als besetzt markieren (F6)

All sections should be planned up front, before you start connecting cables. To document this you may use the STP print function. Print the track plan and afterwards the section numbers on a transparent foil. To enhance the info I recommend to do the following. Start STP in online mode. Go to the info menu and switch to MX9 check mode. Next set every second section to HP1 this generates green color. Use the function keys F9 and F10 to do this quickly. If 2 sections of the same color touch each other you have the additional choice to mark one of them as occupied (F6).

Gleisgrenzen / section borders

Beim Vergeben der Abschnittsnummern verliert man oft den Überblick was schon bearbeitet wurde und wo noch Abschnitte fehlen. Das kann man auch über den zuvor erklärten Trick leicht sichtbar machen.

Einmal im Online-Mode in den Abschnitte SOLL Anzeige Modus wechseln. Nur die nicht definierten Abschnitte sind jetzt schwarz. Man kann jetzt neue Abschnitte definieren, am schnellsten Gleise mit dem Lasso Werkzeug markieren und über die Tastatur <ALT>B B eingeben.

Um auch dieses neu Vergebene Gleis einzufärben kontrolliert man die Abschnittsnummer mittels <ALT>I S und die Abschnittsnummer. Das verifiziert allfällige Tippfehler bei der Abschnittnummer und färbt das Gleis auch gleich rot ein. Noch schnellere Alternative ist indem man STP zum Neuzeichnen des Bildschirms bring zB indem man um ein Feld scrollt oder ähnliches.

While defining sections I often loose track what I have already done. Which sections are still undefined? One method is similar to the trick above.

Just go into online mode, and display the MX9 colors. All undefined track sections will be black. To define a new section use the lasso tool to select fields. next enter <ALT>B B via the keyboard and enter the section number.

To paint also that new section red, just search for it via <ALI>I S and ether the section number. This may help to verify typo on the section number. An alternative method to paint the recently defined track red is to cause a repaint of the STP screen by scrolling at least one field.

A STP controlled switchboard may have various states of automatic modes. I recommend to have indicators to display that information to the user.

Primary example is online or offline mode. I did this once on a layout via signal fields building the word "ON". I switch them between red and green which gives an easy readable info also from bigger distances.

The slow painting of the fields is caused by the accessory article delay value in STP.

Lange STR Dateien sind fehleranfällig beim Editieren. Schnell verliert man beim Blättern in der Datei die Übersicht. Daher sollte man die Datei strukturieren und aufteilen.

Wichtigstes Hilfsmittel sind deutliche Kommentare die durch Trennlinien zusätzlich aufgeteilt werden. So kann man auch über mehrere Bildschirmseiten hinweg schneller die gesuchte Stelle wieder finden.

Bei großen Projekten kann das immer noch zu wenig deutlich sein. Dafür habe ich ein Hilfsmittel geschrieben den STR Joiner. Das Programm unterstützt  das editieren langer STR Dateien in einzelnen Stücken. Es kann aus diesen Fragmenten die Gesamtdatei zusammenstellen. Das erfolgt durch simples unterschieben der STR-Fragmente während dem Editieren der Datei. STP kann so weiterhin seine Wizards benutzen um den Erstellungsvorgang zu unterstützen.

Long STR files are quite error prone. Quickly you loose orientation browsing through the lines. I recommend to split and structure the file.

Most helpful tool for this are comments which are emphased through horizontal lines. This allows easier lookup when you are in search of a specific part.

For bigger projects this might be still not enough. I have written a program called "STR Joiner" It allows linking several files to one bigger one. It supports STP to edit just the parts if you are working in the code. It does this by simply pushing the fragments underneath STP. This allows to use the STP wizards in a normal way.
